Cape May – B&W

I was thinking about one of my favorite b&w photographers and friend, Chuck Kimmerle the other day. How his eyes must be in pain from all of the oversaturated color in my last few posts. I hope his monitor is okay after he threw his mouse at it. I decided, I must get my monochrome on. So, here ya go Chuck.

What is it? Does it matter? Do you care?

Kimmelflip

Once again, I’m having fun playing with older images that I’ve not spent enough time with. I don’t know about you, but, I find that I come back from a shoot, pick the “winners” or “keepers” and then move on to the next shoot leaving the last behind. And doesn’t that fit with the want it now, need it now, show me the next best picture now state of things? Here I am trying to be more mindful about my photography, yet oft times I am not mindful about the images I’ve captured. Rather, I feel compelled to run out and capture the next “keeper” when I likely already have one. I just haven’t taken the time, mindfully, to evaluate what I captured.

Both images are from the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. The lead image was duplicated then flipped and mirrored into a new image and then converted to b&w.  I used the TKActionsv4 luminosity masking panel in Photoshop to fine tune the black & white conversation.  Pretty powerful tool, but, there is a learning curve. I suggest Sean Bashaw’s excellent videos if you are interested in learning about them. The image below was fine tuned with my go to plugin, Topaz Clarity. Yes, there is a clarity slider in Lightroom but this is a much more powerful tool with so much more control.

Having just presented another webinar for Topaz, I am allowed to share my 25% discount code for any Topaz product good through March 27th.  Just click this link and then use the code BARCLAYWEB18 at checkout to save 25%. This includes any upgrade path as well. So, if you own one or more Topaz products, just log into your Topaz account and look for the already discounted upgrade price and then ADD the 25% off.  Makes for a very nice price!

The Silhouettes From the Hideout Ranch – Topaz Webinar

The Wranglers at the ranch were amazing. For the first shot, we were photographing in the other direction, however,  when I looked behind me to see what the sky was doing, Daniel and Ramon were sitting there waiting for us to recognize the wonderful photo op they set up. The others were done in situations where we specifically set up the possibility of silhouettes.  Such fun!

The recorded version of my most recent Topaz Webinar is available to watch here.

Somewhere Over The Rainbow

_DSF7855-Edit

This image was made in the front yard of the agraturismo where we stay in Tuscany. We had just returned from a long day. It looked like the shooting was over so we headed “home.” Then, as we came to dinner this happened! Needless to say, dinner took a backseat for about a half hour. Even the owners of the agraturismo said this kind of situation does not happen too often. It was pretty special. Both the light and the double rainbow.

A reminder about my Topaz Webinar next Tuesday June 30th at 5PM est.  You can sign up by clicking this link.   I hope to see you there!

Topaz Webinar Follow-up – Discount code

Thank you, to the almost 2,000 people that signed up for my Topaz Webinar on Tuesday afternoon. From the feedback, it seems to have been successful. My friends at Topaz have made the special webinar discount code available to share on my blog. If you want to save 30% on any Topaz products including the new Impression (which I love) or the full suite, use the code barclayweb13 at check out. The discount code is only valid through Saturday, November 1st.

The blog image below from Childs Park in PA, is one where I used Topaz Clarity in my demo. Clarity allowed me to add subtle local contrast adding “pop” to this image. It also gave me the ability to add vibrance and saturation to the colors making them look as I recall when shooting it.

Homage to Michael Kahn – New Software from Perfectly Clear and Topaz

_DSF0688-2-Editmatted

I (we) had the good fortune of accidentally running into Michael Kahn, a wonderful B&W film photographer, specializing in boats and seascapes. I had just seen his work at the Focus Gallery in Chatham and was very impressed. We were shooting in Chatham, when he and his wife stopped while riding their bicycles to engage our group and enquire as to what we were doing. What impressed me most about Michael, was his humble demeanor. What a wonderful, engaging, and nice person. Before we knew who he was, someone had asked if he was a photographer too. His reply was something like, “yes, I like to make photographs” No bragging about being in the high end gallery or anything like that. Just that he too loved to make photographs. He shoots with 4×5 and medium format film cameras and prints all of his prints in a wet darkroom. They are a sight to behold in person!

I purchased his terrific book “The Spirit of Sailing” at the gallery and was inspired to make the image presented in my post today. Yes this is the same yellow Dory that I’ve posted previously. If you like sailing or boats, I highly recommend his book which can be purchased at the Focus Gallery online.

My friends at Topaz Labs have released a wonderful new product called Impression. Impression is a faux painting program and is quite good. If you purchase before the end of the month you’ll save 25% using the code SEPIMPRESSION at checkout.  Click this link to take you to the site. If you like a painterly look to your images you’ll like this new product.

Athentech the makers of Perfectly Clear have just released version 2.0 of their fine software that I’ve been using and blogging about recently. With the new release, they have lowered the purchase price and if you click this link you’ll save an additional 10%.
