Thank you, to the almost 2,000 people that signed up for my Topaz Webinar on Tuesday afternoon. From the feedback, it seems to have been successful. My friends at Topaz have made the special webinar discount code available to share on my blog. If you want to save 30% on any Topaz products including the new Impression (which I love) or the full suite, use the code barclayweb13 at check out. The discount code is only valid through Saturday, November 1st.
The blog image below from Childs Park in PA, is one where I used Topaz Clarity in my demo. Clarity allowed me to add subtle local contrast adding “pop” to this image. It also gave me the ability to add vibrance and saturation to the colors making them look as I recall when shooting it.
There is still time to register and attend my Topaz webinar this afternoon. Here is a link to do so, https://www4.gotomeeting.com/register/361809535. I’ll cover the new IMPRESSION as well as DETIAL, CLARITY and B&W EFFECTS 2. And because many are asking in my workshops, I’ll touch on my approach to RAW processing before I use Topaz plug-ins. Hope to see you there!
This image is my homage to my friend Bill Strom who passed from cancer three years ago. One of his last projects was to photograph color behind fallen leaves. Miss you Bill!
I (we) had the good fortune of accidentally running into Michael Kahn, a wonderful B&W film photographer, specializing in boats and seascapes. I had just seen his work at the Focus Gallery in Chatham and was very impressed. We were shooting in Chatham, when he and his wife stopped while riding their bicycles to engage our group and enquire as to what we were doing. What impressed me most about Michael, was his humble demeanor. What a wonderful, engaging, and nice person. Before we knew who he was, someone had asked if he was a photographer too. His reply was something like, “yes, I like to make photographs” No bragging about being in the high end gallery or anything like that. Just that he too loved to make photographs. He shoots with 4×5 and medium format film cameras and prints all of his prints in a wet darkroom. They are a sight to behold in person!
I purchased his terrific book “The Spirit of Sailing” at the gallery and was inspired to make the image presented in my post today. Yes this is the same yellow Dory that I’ve posted previously. If you like sailing or boats, I highly recommend his book which can be purchased at the Focus Gallery online.

Today’s image is from Ireland. I’ve posted a similar image before, however, this time I ran it through Topaz Clarity. WOW! I love this piece of software. It makes this image almost three dimensional on my screen. I’m including the original “finished” image below for your comparison. If you have not yet purchased Clarity today is the last day of the $29.99 price. After today it goes to $49.99. Click this link and use the code claritynew to get the special price.
Topaz Clarity is here. Click this link and use the code claritynew to get it for $29.99 (regular price will be $49.99) through May 31st. The image below is from Fonthill, some of Henry Mercer’s wonderful tile work. Processed with Topaz Clarity and Detail 3. As I said in my last preview post about Clarity, its gonna be a game changer. Good stuff! Way to go Topaz.
I have great news to share! Our friends at Topaz will be releasing the brand new CLARITY sometime late next week. I have an advance copy and WOW, Topaz has done it again. So, what does it do? It adds POP (contrast) to your image in a VERY NATURAL way with abundant control. Different than Detail and more refined than Adjust. It also has an HSL (Hue Saturation Luminosity) tab which allows tight control of the color in your image. Lots of presets too. Trust me on this, CLARITY will become your go to program for adding color and POP (contrast pop) to your images moving forward. Why, because of the new proprietary algorithm written just for this program. It is what makes the adjustments look so natural. No halo’s or over-affected look. Check back later next week for details about the price and release here or on the TOPAZ LABS WEBSITE.
BALL-HEADS FOR SALE A friend has asked me to sell two back-up ball-heads. I have both in my possession and they are both in brand new condition. One is the Really Right Stuff BH-55 LR, the other the coveted Arca Swill B-1 which is hard to find. The price for the BH-55 LR (lever release) is $360.00 plus $15.00 for shipping. For the Arca Swiss with screw type plate (not quick release) $300 plus shipping. Two great ball-heads for about $100 less than new and in new condition.
The first image here is processed with CLARITY and finished with Detail. The image below this one is the before image with just RAW processing applied.
One more from Death Valley. For this image I felt a panoramic crop fit best.
