“I asked one of his students how many times she had taken one of John’s classes. Her response – “15 times”. 15 times?! Nobody takes a seminar with the same photographer 15 times! Well, they do with John and that’s what makes him truly… extraordinary!”

– Dewitt Jones, Professional Photographer, National Geographic

The Palouse in Spring Splendor

June 11 – 16, 2018 – Sold OUT

Limited to 12 participants

Join Steve Zigler and me as we explore one of the most beautiful places in our country, The Palouse.  This will by my 11th year leading a tour in this richly photogenic area. The Palouse is a dry farming area where much of our wheat and other grains are grown.

Our days will be spent photographing the landscape including beautiful barns, abandoned farms, windmills, farm equipment and retired work trucks, and other vehicles in various stages of decay. We’ll catch at least one sunrise and one sunset from atop Steptoe Butte, a 3,612 feet high butte that towers over the surrounding countryside affording a birds-eye view of the fields below. It’s an opportunity to use long lenses to capture stunning shots of the undulating landscape.

The Lush Palouse for Traditional and iPhone Photographers

with Rad Drew

June 18 – 23, 2018

Limited to 12 participants

After our successful tour last year, Rad and I are doing this one again!

Whether in spring or fall, photographing the Palouse is a rare treat. If it was just the clouds and rolling fields, that might be enough. But add to that the contoured tapestry of yellow canola fields, brown fallow fields and green wheat blowing in the breeze and it will take your breath away! Throw in a red barn under a dramatic sky and call the paramedics!

The quality of the light is extraordinary and because it’s ever-changing in the way it illuminates the landscape, it creates unique challenges for photographers. Chasing the light can be fun, but it’s usually an act of futility because if you wait and watch, that great illumination will eventually return to grace your viewfinder again.
We’ll stop in small towns for lunch and breaks, and have the chance to do some street photography, western style.

Glacier National Park – with Chuck Kimmerle

July 9 – 14, 2018

Limited to 12 participants

$1,595.00  with a deposit of $500.00

Please join Chuck Kimmerle and me as we return to explore and photograph the splendor of Glacier National Park. This park is a jewel in the national parks system, hosting not only a large number of namesake glaciers and snow fields, but the headwaters for three major watersheds, sending flows toward Hudson Bay, the Pacific Ocean, and Guld of Mexico.

The park is home to wolves, moose, grizzly bears, black bears, marmots, bighorn sheep and mountain goats. During our 2017 workshop, we saw all but the wolves. It was an unforgettable experience. Of course, we cannot forget the massive peaks, beautiful valleys, and myriad of rivers, waterfalls, and wildflowers.

This workshop will include some optional hikes up to five miles, but there is more than enough to photograph much closer to the car, if that is your preference. Of the five photographs above, only the last one required a hike (4 easy miles roundtrip) to Avalanche Lake. The rest were shot from the road or parking lots. So, there is something for everyone. We encourage both color and black and white photographers to join us, as well as those working with film or digital.

What will be different this year? We are going a month earlier than last year so should be able to enjoy some wonderful spring, mountain runoff and hearty mountain snowfields. Also, there should still be a lot of snow at Logan Pass, making for some unique photographic possibilities and an increased chance to see bighorn sheep and mountain goats up close. Early July is a special time in Glacier as visitation is below peak and the weather can be dynamic.

In addition to guided field work where we can refine our personal styles and help realize our vision, we will have plenty of time to edit our photographs and to improve our workflows. If you need help working in Photoshop or Lightroom, we will be more than glad to help. This is a full-service workshop, and we will not be happy until you are happy.

The course fee includes logistical planning, instruction, and post-workshop assistance, if needed. You will be responsible for your travel to and from the park as well as your room and board. We have made a group reservation at the lovely and peaceful Rising Sun Motor Inn, which will allow us access to the most beautiful areas of this very large park with minimal travel.

The Cape Cod Experience – Massachusetts

With Rad Drew

October 22 – 28, 2018 – Note this is a 7 day tour!

Limited to 12 participants (Two Instructors)

$1,695.00  – $500.00 deposit

For 2018, I am partnering with my friend and tremendous photographer/teacher Rad Drew. We are offering a new and expanded photo tour exploring the many beautiful areas of lower and outer Cape Cod. We will photograph the picturesque Cape Cod National Seashore, with several lighthouses, beautiful beaches, marshes and small, hidden harbors nearby. This area is truly a photographer’s paradise and this is a photo tour you won’t want to miss. We will make a trip into the sand dunes culminating at one of the most picturesque lighthouses on Cape Cod (the fee for this trip is included in the cost of this photo tour).

This photo tour begins on October 22 with a meet and greet followed by an evening sunset shoot at a beautiful location nearby. The tour culminates with a sunrise shoot on October 28. This is a longer tour than has been offered in the past so we can include more photo shoots and take advantage of the many great places that this area of the Cape has to offer. Each day’s itinerary may vary according to the locations we visit, weather conditions and how long we shoot. Processing sessions will be held in the afternoon and we will cover the use of Lightroom, Photoshop and numerous plug-ins such as Topaz, MacPhun, Google (Nik) and others. Rad will cover how to process your images with your iPhone or iPad with APPS like Snapseed, Distressed FX, Formulas and much, much more.

We will show you tips and techniques to help you to get the most from your images. There is no better time to visit (and photograph) the Cape as this time of year is less crowded and the weather is still relatively warm. The marshes have turned a deep shade of yellow/gold, the days are shorter and weather systems often move through the area creating dramatic skies and beautiful light.

The goal of this workshop is to guide and help you to make photographs the will make your heart sing. We will work with you and help you develop your photographic vision. We’ll cover the quality of natural light, color, visual depth, visual design and composition in landscape and close-up technique. You will learn how to creatively photograph using different techniques and different lenses. We encourage you to read your manual and know how to use your camera before the workshop. This will help you move forward with creativity and vision. In addition to supporting traditional photographers on our workshop (Rad shoots with Fuji, and uses a converted Lumix for creating infrared images), he is a master of the iPhone and will be helping those who want to explore iPhoneography.

A $500 deposit is required to hold your spot.
