Workshops 2017 – 2018

“I asked one of his students how many times she had taken one of John’s classes. Her response – “15 times”.
15 times?!

Nobody takes a seminar with the same photographer 15 times!
Well, they do with John and that’s what makes him truly… extraordinary!”

April 20-29 – $5,395 (SOLD OUT)

Limited to 10 participants

Note: A 3% fee will be added if using PayPal or a credit card

Join me and Peter Cox as we explore Glencoe and The Isle of Sky in Scotland.  This is a ten day tour of some of the most dramatic and beautiful scenery in Scotland
Where will we be – Glencoe (famous for the massacre of the Clan MacDonald at the hands of Clan Campbell in 1692) is one is of the most magnificent areas of natural beauty in the whole of Britain. The mountains are built from some of the oldest sedimentary and volcanic strata in the world. It’s a picturesque and dramatic landscape that encapsulates why photographers are drawn to the Scottish Highlands – mountains, lochs, moorland and woodland are all waiting to be captured with our cameras. Skye is a wonderfully dramatic and picturesque island off the west coast of Scotland and has been voted ‘the 4th best island in the world’ by National Geographic magazine. It’s a place of extremes –
from the craggy outline of the Cuillin that dominate the landscape to the sheer cliffs and imposing headlands that descend down to peaceful bays & beaches. It’s changing weather patterns can crate wonderfully atmospheric lighting conditions for photography and given the right weather conditions Skye can be an ideal location for glorious sunrises and sunsets.
What is included –  Pretty much everything, except any gratuities and gifts you might want to purchase once you get to Scotland.  This is an ALL INCLUSIVE trip.  Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as in country transportation,  The fee for a boat ride, and two professional guides/instructors.  And of course the promise of a ton of fun and LOTS of laughter!
What is not included – Airfare to and from Scotland.  Any extra nights before or after the tour.
How many – Due to van size, and, our desire to have just two, we will be limiting the groups to 10 participants.  Spouses are welcome, however, the price will be the same for a non-photographer as it is a photographer.
Tuition– For the first trip, April 20-29 $5,395 per person based on double occupancy.  The single supplement is $1,500. (This will give you and idea of the room cost!!).   With enough interest we will add a second trip with the dates of April 8-17, $5,595 based on double occupancy with a single supplement of $1,700.  Why the price difference?  For the first trip we had to use different more expensive hotels.
How do I sign up –  First send me an email to assure your spot!  Then, send your non-refundable deposit  (except where I can fill your spot from a wait list) of $1,000 to secure your spot. Why non-refundable?  Due to the limited availabliy of rooms, we are required to pay a deposit and then payment in full, 4 months prior to our arrival.  Again, I am happy to provide a FULL REFUND, if I can fill your spot.  Payable by check to the address below.  I am happy to accept PayPal or a credit card, however, I will need to add 3% to cover the fees.

The Palouse in Spring Splendor

May 25-30, 2019 – Sold OUT – Wait list

Limited to 12 participants

Join Steve Koppel and me as we explore one of the most beautiful places in our country, The Palouse.  This will by my 12th year leading a tour in this richly photogenic area. The Palouse is a dry farming area where much of our wheat and other grains are grown.

Our days will be spent photographing the landscape including beautiful barns, abandoned farms, windmills, farm equipment and retired work trucks, and other vehicles in various stages of decay. We’ll catch at least one sunrise and one sunset from atop Steptoe Butte, a 3,612 feet high butte that towers over the surrounding countryside affording a birds-eye view of the fields below. It’s an opportunity to use long lenses to capture stunning shots of the undulating landscape.

The Lush Palouse for Traditional and iPhone Photographers

with Rad Drew

June 24-29, 2019 – SOLD OUT! Wait list

Limited to 12 participants

After our successful tour last year, Rad and I are doing this one again!

Whether in spring or fall, photographing the Palouse is a rare treat. If it was just the clouds and rolling fields, that might be enough. But add to that the contoured tapestry of yellow canola fields, brown fallow fields and green wheat blowing in the breeze and it will take your breath away! Throw in a red barn under a dramatic sky and call the paramedics!

The quality of the light is extraordinary and because it’s ever-changing in the way it illuminates the landscape, it creates unique challenges for photographers. Chasing the light can be fun, but it’s usually an act of futility because if you wait and watch, that great illumination will eventually return to grace your viewfinder again.
We’ll stop in small towns for lunch and breaks, and have the chance to do some street photography, western style.
