March 27-April 1, 2017 – $1,395 – $500 deposit

Join Steve Zigler and me on a journey to the “Low Country” of Charleston South Carolina.  Of course we will spend some time in the historic city, but, we will also explore the amazing Magnolia Plantation, Folly Beach, the “bone yard” and more.

Smoky Mountains – Springtime Splendor

April 17-22, 2017 – $1,195.00

FIRE UPDATE – In speaking with my sources who live there.  The park itself has been spared from the fire.  Most of the damage was between Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.  All is well with regard to the areas we will photograph.

The Smokies is my favorite east coast park and this will be my 13th trip. Come explore the magical explosion of lush spring color like you’ve never seen before with Red Bud and Dogwood mixed in.  We will also explore gently flowing streams as they cascade over moss covered boulders and rocks, the iconic Cades Cove, a view from the top at Clingmans Dome and more.   There will be classroom time where image processing will be taught.

The Palouse in Spring

May 29 – June 3, 2017 – $1,395 – FULLPlease check out the workshop that Rad Drew and I will be doing  just before this one here

Join Steve Zigler and me as we explore one of the most beautiful places in our country, The Palouse.  This will by my 10th year leading a tour in this richly photogenic area. The Palouse is a dry farming area where much of our wheat and other grains are grown. The region is covered with rolling fields and dotted with aging barns. The view from Steptoe Butte is like non other in this county.  The Palouse is an area where you’ll find opportunity to make photographs at every turn.

Glacier National Park with Chuck Kimmerle

August 13-18, 2017

Limited to 13 participants

$1,495.00  with a deposit of $500.00

Join Chuck Kimmerle and me as we explore the majestic landscape of Glacier National Park.  All Glacier images by Chuck Kimmerle.

Glacier National Park is a jewel in the parks system. Not only does it contain a tremendous diversity of terrain and ecosystems, but also the headwaters for three watersheds—emptying into Hudson Bay, the Pacific Ocean, and the Gulf of Mexico. It nurtures abundant, and easily photographed, wildlife, alpine lakes, many dozens of mountain peaks, stunning vistas, and some amazing weather. What it does not have anymore, ironically, are very many large and easily photographed glaciers. Despite that, the park offers an amazing variety of stunning scenes and subjects for us to explore and photograph.

The famed Going-To-The-Sun road offers spectacular vistas and adjacent waterfalls only feet from the cars, and Logan Pass is a guaranteed place to photograph bighorn sheep and, if we are lucky, mountain goats. The park is also home to wolves, grizzly bears, and mountain lions, all of which Chuck saw during his time in the park as the 2013 artist-in-residence.

While this park is amazing, as with all workshops led by Chuck and John, location is secondary. Our priority is to help make you stronger and more well-refined photographers. You will have our undivided attention. Of course there will be numerous day trips to photograph during our week together, but we will also set aside time to edit and process our images as well as hear presentations from the instructors and share work with your fellow students.

The Cape Cod Experience – Massachusetts

With Betty Wiley

October 4-10, 2017

Limited to 14 participants (Two Instructors)

$1,495.00  – $500.00 deposit

For 2017, I am partnering once again with the amazing Betty Wiley. We are offering a new and expanded photo tour exploring the many beautiful areas of lower and outer Cape Cod. We will photograph the picturesque Cape Cod National Seashore, with several lighthouses, beautiful beaches, marshes and small, hidden harbors nearby. This area is truly a photographer’s paradise and this is a photo tour you won’t want to miss. We will make a trip into the sand dunes culminating at one of the most picturesque lighthouses on Cape Cod (the fee for this trip is included in the cost of this photo tour).

This photo tour begins on Wednesday, October 4 with a meet and greet followed by an evening sunset shoot at a beautiful location nearby. The tour culminates with a sunrise shoot on Tuesday, October 10. This is a longer tour than has been offered in the past so we can include more photo shoots and take advantage of the many great places that this area of the Cape has to offer. Each day’s itinerary may vary according to the locations we visit, weather conditions and how long we shoot. Processing sessions will be held in the afternoon and we will cover the use of Lightroom, Photoshop and numerous plug-ins such as Topaz, MacPhun, Google (Nik) and others. We will show you tips and techniques to help you to get the most from your images.

There is really no better time to visit (and photograph) the Cape as this time of year is less crowded and the weather is still relatively warm. The marshes have turned a deep shade of yellow/gold, the days are shorter and weather systems often move through the area creating dramatic skies and beautiful light.

The goal of this workshop is to guide and help you to make photographs with more impact. We will work with you and help you develop your photographic vision. We’ll cover the quality of natural light, color, visual depth, visual design and composition in landscape and close-up technique. You will learn how to creatively photograph using different techniques and different lenses. We encourage you to read your manual and know how to use your camera before the workshop. This will help you move forward with creativity and vision.

A $500 deposit is required to hold your spot.
